Aquos Haswing Cayman GPS Trolling Motor: Review

The Aquos Haswing Cayman GPS Trolling Motor is a fairly affordable, yet also a fairly high-quality option to keep in mind.

Who is This Product For?

The Cayman GPS Trolling Motor is designed for anyone who needs a good trolling motor for their fishing boat but does not want to spend a ridiculous amount of money. Yes, you can find cheaper options than this, but you can also find way more expensive ones too.

When it comes down to it, the Cayman GPS Trolling Motor is one of the most cost-effective options out there, especially with the fairly low price it comes in at. So, it’s meant for people who need something decent, but don’t want to pay an arm and a leg for it.

What’s Included?

When you purchase the Cayman GPS Trolling Motor, you get a 55-pound thrust trolling motor, which is not too bad, especially for a fairly low price. Now, in terms of accessories, if you want a wireless foot controller and a quick-release bracket, you will have to pay extra for them, and yes, even the propeller costs extra too, which honestly is a bit ridiculous.

After some searching, we were able to find a package that contained all the options you need for a full setup called Aquos Haswing CaymanB Trolling Motor package.

However, the Cayman GPS Trolling Motor does come with a durable shaft and housed electronics, an LED battery indicator, and mounting hardware too, plus a few extras we will mention in the section below.

Overview of Features

Alright, so the Cayman GPS Trolling Motor is a fairly inexpensive trolling motor, and it comes in at a much lower price than many other options out there. Of course, there are much fancier, more advanced, and more powerful options out there, but of course, they also cost a lot more money. All things considered, for the low price which the Cayman GPS Trolling Motor comes at, it actually has a surprising amount of high-quality features.

Salt and Freshwater

So this is not the feature we would usually mention first, but when it comes down to it, a lot of trolling motors are designed only for freshwater use, which of course is a problem if you want to go trolling for fish in brackish water or saltwater.

However, the Cayman GPS Trolling Motor is designed so it can be used in both freshwater and saltwater conditions. It is made to be highly resistant to the effects of saltwater, such as rusting and corrosion. Yes, you do want to wash it thoroughly after use in saltwater, but nonetheless, it does work.

Build and Durability

In terms of overall durability, the Cayman GPS Trolling Motor is definitely not bad. The shaft is made out of cast aluminum. Now, this could be a bit tougher, especially when compared to other shafts made of composite materials, but it is still pretty tough.

It should be able to take a hit without bending or cracking, and it should be able to fight fairly strong currents without warping. All electronics and vital components on the Cayman GPS Trolling Motor are encased in special housing to keep out dirt, dust, water, and anything else that may cause damage. So, for the low price, it’s actually more durable than we would have expected.

Size and Power

Something else that you probably want to know about the Cayman GPS Trolling Motor is how big and powerful it is. Now, seeing as this item does not cost all that much, it is fair to assume that it’s not the biggest or the most powerful option out there, and you would be right. Yes, the Cayman GPS Trolling Motor is a 12-volt option that can provide a maximum thrust of 55 pounds, and it’s a 48-inch motor, although it also comes in a 54-inch option.

Either way, the Cayman GPS Trolling Motor is strong enough to fight some moderate currents and winds, but no, it’s not the most powerful option out there, so it’s probably best not to use it in rough waters or strong currents.

That said, while it’s not exactly super speedy, it should get you where you need to go. What is actually very impressive about the Cayman GPS Trolling Motor is that it is extremely quiet, and rated at a maximum decibel level of 55, which is very quiet.

Mounting and Deploying

The Cayman GPS Trolling Motor is designed to be easy to mount, and it comes with all necessary mounting hardware. It’s not overly heavy, so mounting and deploying it is not too much of an issue, but it could be easier. This is probably why these guys made a quick-release bracket that helps make the process a whole lot easier.

Of course, if you want the quick-release bracket, you are going to have to pay extra for it, but we would recommend getting it because you will save yourself a lot of trouble in the long run.

However, what is nice here is that for the most part, you can beach a small boat without so much as retracting the Cayman GPS Trolling Motor, and it does come with a switch to retract it automatically.

Battery Life

The Cayman GPS Trolling Motor is a 660-watt motor that has a max draw of 55 amps, which is very normal for a 55 lb thrust motor. If you are careful with it, a 105 ah battery should be able to get you a full day out on the water with it before the battery dies.

We like to use two 105 ah batteries to prevent a shortened fishing trip and avoid battery damage. The display does at least feature an LED battery meter, so you know exactly how much time you have on the water before the battery needs to be recharged.

Display and GPS, + More

Now, what does need to be said about the Cayman GPS Trolling Motor is that it does come with a Helmsman GPS system, but not the actual display. Yes, this thing can be connected to your tablet or smartphone, which will be used as the display. Some people are not fans of this, but personally, we don’t mind it, especially seeing as this motor really does not cost very much, all things considered.

What is nice is that the GPS here does provide various functions, including recording routes, GPS navigation, anchoring features, and even cruise control. The going theme with the Cayman GPS Trolling Motor seems to be that it comes with more advanced features than we would usually expect from a trolling motor that comes in at a reasonably low price.

Pros

  • Good for saltwater and freshwater
  • Good for slow and moderate currents
  • Decent GPS feature with various functions
  • Fairly durable shaft and housing for components
  • LED battery indicator
  • Very easy to mount, deploy, and retract
  • Affordable

Cons

  • No sonar or fish finder
  • Does not have its own display
  • Not ideal if you need a lot of power

Tutorial

The Cayman GPS Trolling Motor is really not very hard to use at all. All you have to do is mount it according to the instructions, then use the included controls to set your speed. You can then connect it to a tablet or smartphone to access the GPS features, which you can then use to set and record a course, engage the cruise control, and more. For more information on how to use the Cayman GPS Trolling Motor, take a look at the included videos below.

Alternatives

So, the Cayman GPS Trolling Motor might not have all that much power, and it does not have some crucial features, such as sonar. If it does not suit you, there are some good alternatives you can take a look at.

One of these alternatives is the Motorguide xi5 Trolling Motor. This particular option is a fair bit more expensive, but it also has a lot more power and speed, and yes, there are various power and size options, plus it has sonar too.

The Minn Kota Ulterra 80(link to Amazon.com) is a top of the line motor from the industry leader in electric trolling motors. This motor features auto-deploy, and you can purchase just about every accessory under the sun for Minn Kota products.

New to the market is the Garmin Force Trolling Motor(link to Amazon.com) looks to be a great trolling motor to look into, although it is very pricey. Garmin is a top-rated manufacturer of marine products and has a full line of compatible electronic devices.

Conclusion

At the end of the day, we think that the Cayman GPS Trolling Motor is a perfectly fine option to keep in mind. What you will appreciate about this motor is that it is very affordable, especially when compared to other options.

However, it does come in at a price, which indicates that it does have a decent level of power, durability, and some pretty good features too. It might be missing sonar and a couple of other features we would like, but on the other hand, it is battery efficient, cost-effective, and should work fine for most basic needs.
